Code P0117 Saturn Description

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the ECT sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit.
The ECM uses this high side coolant rationality diagnostic to determine if the input from the ECT sensor is skewed warmer than normal. The internal clock of the ECM will record the amount of time the ignition is OFF. If the calibrated ignition OFF time is met at start-up, the ECM will compare the temperature difference between the ECT and the intake air temperature (IAT) to determine if the temperatures are within an acceptable operating range of each other. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects a the ECT is warmer than 139°C (282°F) for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0117 Saturn Code

1. What are the common symptoms of OBDII code P0117 in a Saturn?

- Common symptoms include a decrease in fuel economy, engine overheating, rough idling, and issues with the vehicle's heater.

2. What are the potential causes of the P0117 code in a Saturn?

- Possible causes include a faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, a problem with the ECT sensor wiring, low engine coolant levels, or a malfunctioning thermostat.

3. How can I diagnose the cause of the low input signal in the engine coolant temperature circuit?

- You can use a multimeter to test the ECT sensor for proper resistance values, check the ECT sensor wiring for any breaks or short circuits, and ensure the engine coolant level is sufficient.

4. Can a malfunctioning thermostat trigger the P0117 code in a Saturn?

- Yes, a malfunctioning thermostat that is stuck open or closed can cause the engine coolant temperature to read incorrectly and trigger the P0117 code.

5. What are some repair tips for addressing the P0117 code in a Saturn?

- Start by inspecting the ECT sensor and its wiring for any visible damage. If necessary, replace the ECT sensor and clear the trouble code to see if the issue persists.

6. How critical is it to address the P0117 code promptly in a Saturn?

- It is important to address the P0117 code promptly to prevent potential engine damage due to incorrect coolant temperature readings and to ensure optimal engine performance.

7. Can driving with the P0117 code in a Saturn lead to further issues?

- Continuing to drive with the P0117 code can potentially cause the engine to overheat, leading to more severe damage and costly repairs.

8. Is it possible for a loose or corroded electrical connection to trigger the P0117 code in a Saturn?

- Yes, a loose or corroded electrical connection related to the ECT sensor can disrupt the signal and trigger the P0117 code.

9. Will resetting the trouble codes on a Saturn resolve the P0117 code temporarily?

- Resetting the trouble codes may temporarily clear the P0117 code, but if the underlying issue causing the low input signal is not fixed, the code is likely to reappear.

10. Should I seek professional help to diagnose and repair the P0117 code in my Saturn?

- If you are unsure about diagnosing or repairing the P0117 code, it is recommended to seek professional help to ensure the issue is properly addressed and resolved.
