Code P0106 KIA Description

The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold. Pressure in the intake manifold is affected by engine speed, throttle opening, air temperature, Barometric Pressure (BARO) and if equipped, turbocharger output. A diaphragm within the MAP sensor is displaced by the pressure changes that occur from the varying load and operating conditions of the engine. The sensor translates this action into electrical resistance.
The MAP sensor wiring includes 3 circuits. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies a regulated 5 volts to the sensor on a 5 V reference circuit. The ECM supplies ground on a low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a signal voltage to the ECM, relative to the pressure changes, on the MAP sensor signal circuit. The ECM converts the signal voltage input to a pressure value.
Under normal operation the greatest pressure that can exist in the intake manifold is at ignition ON, engine OFF, which is equal to the BARO. The lowest manifold pressure occurs when the vehicle is idling or decelerating. The ECM monitors the MAP sensor signal for pressure outside of the normal range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM determines the MAP Sensor is stuck within the normal operating range. It accomplishes this by running 3 different models within the software to determine the values.

  • P0106 on a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. MIL on for about 10 miles then turned off. Nothing seems out of order. Thought maybe a dirty throttle body could have caused but TPS percent at idle is only 3 to 5 percent.

  • Other than the MAP Sensor, the other thing that may cause the problem is the Throttle Body. You could try cleaning the throttle body before replacing any other parts.

  • Thank you, I watched a video but the throttle body plate doesn't open with the vehicle not running and accelerator pushed and they said not to open it by hand as it might mess up programming. I also read that the PVC valve going bad could soak the MAP sensor and cause issues. I guess I will have to take it back to the Kia dealership that has misdiagnosed it several times already :( Shame is it runs just fine most of the time and only rarely throws the code which then clears on its own.
