Code P0103 2017 Ford F150 Description

The Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine. The air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool. This hot wire is maintained at 200°C (392°F) above the ambient temperature as measured by a constant cold wire. The current required to maintain the temperature of the hot wire is proportional to the mass airflow. The MAF Sensor then outputs a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) proportional to the intake air mass. The PCM calculates the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air to fuel ratio. The MAF sensor is located near the air cleaner assembly. Most MAF sensors have an integrated Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Mass Airflow Sensor output changes above a maximum calibrated limit while the engine is running.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0103 2017 Ford F150 Code

1. What does OBDII code P0103 mean on a 2017 Ford F150?

P0103 indicates that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is sending a voltage signal to the engine control module (ECM) that is higher than expected, signaling a "high input" issue.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0103 on a 2017 Ford F150?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting, or the check engine light turning on.

3. What are the possible causes of a P0103 code in a 2017 Ford F150?

Potential causes include a faulty MAF sensor, damaged or corroded wiring or connectors, intake air leaks, or an improperly installed air filter.

4. Can a dirty air filter trigger code P0103 on a 2017 Ford F150?

Yes, a clogged or improperly installed air filter can disrupt airflow and potentially contribute to a P0103 code.

5. How do you fix a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

Possible fixes include cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connections, inspecting the air intake system for leaks, or replacing the air filter if necessary.

6. Is it safe to drive with a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

While it may be possible to drive, it is not recommended, as the engine may perform poorly and consume more fuel, which could lead to further damage over time.

7. How do you clean the MAF sensor to address a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

Carefully remove the MAF sensor and use a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner to spray the sensor element. Avoid touching or damaging the sensor during cleaning.

8. Can a vacuum leak cause a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

Yes, a vacuum leak can alter the airflow measurements, potentially leading to a P0103 code.

9. What tools are needed to diagnose a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter to check electrical connections, and possibly a MAF sensor cleaner for maintenance.

10. How much does it typically cost to repair a P0103 code on a 2017 Ford F150?

Repair costs vary, but replacing a MAF sensor can cost between $100 and $300, while fixing wiring or air leaks may add to the expense depending on labor rates.
