Code P0059 2018 Chevrolet Silverado Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects the HO2S heater is not within a specified resistance range at engine start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0059 2018 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0059 mean on a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0059 indicates an issue with the heater circuit resistance for the oxygen sensor (HO2S) on Bank 2 Sensor 1, which is located on the exhaust system before the catalytic converter on the side opposite Cylinder 1.

2. What are common symptoms of the P0059 code in a 2018 Chevy Silverado?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, possible poor fuel economy, rough idling, and difficulty passing emissions tests.

3. What causes the P0059 code in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the heater circuit, a blown fuse, or a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM).

4. How do you diagnose the P0059 code in a Chevy Silverado?

Start by scanning for codes and inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, check the oxygen sensor heater resistance with a multimeter, and verify fuse integrity in the heater circuit.

5. Can you drive a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado with the P0059 code?

While the truck may still be drivable, ignoring the P0059 code can lead to increased emissions, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential damage to other components.

6. How do you fix the P0059 code on a 2018 Chevy Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing the Bank 2 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, and checking for and replacing blown fuses.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0059 code on a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

The cost to replace an oxygen sensor typically ranges from $150 to $300, depending on labor rates and parts pricing, but additional repairs for wiring or the PCM may increase costs.

8. Will clearing the P0059 code solve the problem on a Chevy Silverado?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but it will not fix the underlying issue and the code is likely to return.

9. How can you prevent the P0059 code from occurring again?

Regular maintenance, including inspecting and replacing oxygen sensors as needed, checking wiring for damage, and ensuring proper electrical connections, can help prevent this code.

10. Is the P0059 code related to emissions problems in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Yes, the P0059 code can affect the operation of the oxygen sensor heater, which may disrupt the air-fuel ratio and lead to higher emissions.
