Code P0053 2017 GMC Sierra Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects the HO2S heater is not within a specified resistance range at engine start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0053 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P0053 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0053 indicates a problem with the heater circuit resistance in the oxygen sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1), which helps the sensor reach operating temperature for accurate readings.

What are the symptoms of code P0053 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, poor fuel economy, rough engine performance, and potential difficulty passing emissions tests.

What causes code P0053 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Causes may include a faulty oxygen sensor heater circuit, damaged wiring or connectors, blown fuses, or an issue with the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM).

How can I diagnose code P0053 on my 2017 GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to check the heater circuit resistance and verify proper voltage supply to the oxygen sensor.

Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with code P0053 active?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, you might experience reduced performance and fuel efficiency. Prolonged driving with this code could lead to further damage or emissions issues.

How do I fix code P0053 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the oxygen sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1), fixing or replacing damaged wiring, or addressing issues in the PCM if necessary.

What is Bank 1 Sensor 1 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine with cylinder 1, and Sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor located before the catalytic converter.

How much does it cost to repair code P0053 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $150 to $400 depending on whether the oxygen sensor needs replacement or if more extensive wiring or PCM repairs are required.

Could a faulty oxygen sensor cause code P0053 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a faulty oxygen sensor with a malfunctioning heater circuit is a common cause of this code.

Will replacing the oxygen sensor clear code P0053 in my 2017 GMC Sierra?
