Code P0052 2017 GMC Sierra Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects a short to voltage in the heater output low side driver circuit of the heated oxygen sensor when the heater is commanded ON for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0052 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0052 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0052 indicates a problem with the Heater Control Circuit High Voltage for the Bank 2 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor, which is responsible for warming the sensor to ensure accurate readings.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0052 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, increased fuel consumption, poor engine performance, or difficulty passing emissions tests.

3. What causes the P0052 code to appear on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a blown fuse, or issues with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

4. How do I diagnose code P0052 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, check the oxygen sensor for proper operation, and test the heater circuit for high resistance or open circuits.

5. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with a P0052 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, prolonged operation with this code can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

6. How do I fix the P0052 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the Bank 2 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or addressing any issues with the PCM.

7. How can I prevent the P0052 code from occurring in the future?

Regular maintenance, including inspecting wiring and ensuring oxygen sensors are functioning properly, can help prevent this code from reappearing.

8. Does a P0052 code always mean the oxygen sensor is bad on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

No, the issue could also be due to wiring problems, a blown fuse, or a PCM malfunction rather than the oxygen sensor itself.

9. What side of the engine is Bank 2 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite Bank 1, which is typically the side without cylinder 1.

10. How much does it cost to repair a P0052 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Costs vary depending on the issue, but replacing an oxygen sensor typically ranges from $100 to $300, including parts and labor. Wiring repairs may cost more if extensive work is needed.
