Code P0017 Saturn Description
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is triggered by a notched reluctor wheel built into the exhaust camshaft sprocket. The CMP sensor provides 6 signal pulses every camshaft revolution. Each notch, or feature of the reluctor wheel is of a different size for individual cylinder identification. This means the CMP and crankshaft position (CKP) signals are pulse width encoded to enable the PCM to constantly monitor their relationship. This relationship is used to determine camshaft actuator position and control its phasing at the correct value. The PCM also uses this signal to identify the compression stroke of each cylinder, and for sequential fuel injection. The CMP sensor is connected to the PCM by a 12-volt, low reference, and signal circuit.

so what does this mean? I just got the p0017 and p0008 check engine light. I have been having issues with this 2010 Saturn outlook. I had one cylinder re-bored (sp) back in 2011. just had a coil pack changed 3 months ago. they had to replace the cat. converter for free about the same time, 3 months ago. now the check engine light is on again.
the car is not having an issue starting or stalling which can be symptoms. wondering if I should just get rid of it -

You could either have a bad crankshaft position or camshaft position sensor, or an stretched or misaligned timing chain.

the wife ran our 2008 outlook completely out of gas, and it was rough to get it started back up after getting a few gallons into the tank. later that day I noticed the cel and found it was on for p0017. my blue driver odb2 tool had 16 reported fixes to the problem, one of which was changing the oil (I've noticed in the past that my cel trips and other quirky computer errors pop up whenever i get around 10% oil life remaining, I was at 18% at the time). So I changed the oil, and cleared the codes and drove it a week with no problems. I then packed up the wife and kids and drove from toledo to virginia beach and back with no problems. The day after I got back from va the cel was back with P0017.
My questions are; What troubleshooting steps/fixes can I perform in my driveway without yanking the motor? And, how much should I expect to pay to get the timing chain tightened/replaced? -
