P0016 Lexus Code - Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor 'A'

Quick Answer

In the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). Common causes include Low or Dirty Engine Oil, Oil control valve filter, Faulty Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly (for intake camshaft). Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P0016 Lexus Description

In the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM performs intake and exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft. To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learned value while the engine is idling. The VVT learned value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learned value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0016.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0016 Lexus Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0016 mean on a Lexus?

- The P0016 code indicates that there is a discrepancy in the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors in Bank 1, leading to a potential issue with the synchronization of the engine's timing.

2. What are common symptoms of code P0016 in a Lexus?

- Common symptoms include rough idling, decreased fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the engine, and possibly the engine failing to start at all. The check engine light will also be illuminated.

3. What can cause the P0016 code to appear in a Lexus?

- Potential causes include a timing belt or chain that has slipped or is worn out, issues with the camshaft or crankshaft position sensors (such as faulty sensors or wiring problems), or a problem with the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system.

4. How can I fix the P0016 code on my Lexus?

- Repairs might involve replacing or repairing the timing belt or chain, replacing faulty camshaft or crankshaft sensors, repairing any faulty wiring or connections, or addressing issues with the VVT system.

5. Is it safe to drive a Lexus with the P0016 code?

- Driving with the P0016 code can lead to further engine damage, decreased performance, and potentially unsafe driving conditions. It is advisable to address the issue as soon as possible.

6. How is the P0016 code diagnosed in a Lexus?

- Diagnosis typically involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, followed by a visual inspection of the timing belt or chain, sensors, and wiring. A mechanic might also check the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks to see if they are aligned properly.

7. What tools are needed to diagnose the P0016 code on a Lexus?

- Tools needed may include an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing sensor functionality and wiring integrity, and possibly a timing light to check the mechanical timing of the engine.

8. Can a faulty battery or poor electrical connections cause the P0016 code?

- While a faulty battery or poor electrical connections typically do not cause this code directly, they can exacerbate existing issues or lead to sensor malfunctions that could trigger the P0016 code.

9. What is the cost to fix the P0016 code in a Lexus?

- The cost can vary widely depending on the root cause and the necessary repairs. Simple sensor replacements might cost a few hundred dollars, while more extensive repairs like timing chain or belt replacement can run into the thousands.
