Code P0011 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator system enables the Engine Control Module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve signal from the ECM is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid valve ON time. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. The ECM controls the solenoid valve by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to the ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects an open solenoid circuit in the CMP actuator for greater than 1 second or a cumulative of 5 seconds when the solenoid is commanded OFF.
The ECM monitors the performance of the camshaft position (CMP) actuator system by monitoring the calibrated desired position and the actual position of the camshaft, through the 4X signal of the CMP sensor. If the difference between the actual and the desired position is greater than a calibrated angle for a calibrated amount of time, DTC P0011 will be set.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0011 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P0011 mean for a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0011 indicates that the intake camshaft timing is over-advanced or not as expected by the engine control module, typically related to the variable valve timing system.

What are common symptoms of code P0011 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, rough idling, decreased fuel efficiency, hard starting, or a noticeable knocking noise from the engine.

What causes code P0011 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include low engine oil levels, dirty or degraded oil, a faulty camshaft position actuator or solenoid, issues with the timing chain, or problems with the oil control valve.

Can low oil levels trigger code P0011 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, insufficient or dirty oil can prevent proper operation of the variable valve timing system, leading to the code being triggered.

How can I fix code P0011 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Begin by checking and replacing the engine oil if necessary. Inspect the camshaft actuator, solenoid, and timing components for damage or wear and replace as needed.

Is it safe to drive a 2017 GMC Sierra with code P0011?

Driving with code P0011 can lead to engine performance issues and potential damage over time. It’s best to address the issue promptly to prevent further complications.

How do I diagnose code P0011 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Start by checking the oil condition and level. Use a scan tool to monitor camshaft timing and inspect the camshaft actuator, solenoid, and wiring for faults or damage.

Can a faulty camshaft actuator cause code P0011 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a malfunctioning camshaft actuator can disrupt the intake camshaft timing, causing the P0011 code to appear.

What does the camshaft position actuator do in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The camshaft position actuator adjusts the timing of the intake camshaft to optimize engine performance and efficiency under varying conditions.

How much does it cost to repair code P0011 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can vary depending on the issue. An oil change might cost $50–$100, while replacing a camshaft actuator or solenoid could cost $200–$500, plus labor.
