C1234 Ford Code - Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Input Signal Missing

Quick Answer

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module receives wheel speed readings from each wheel speed sensor and processes this information to determine if an ABS event is necessary. Common causes include Mismatched Tire Size, Damage Wheel Speed Sensor Ring, Faulty Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code C1234 Ford Description

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module receives wheel speed readings from each wheel speed sensor and processes this information to determine if an ABS event is necessary. The wheel speed sensor detects the magnetic field of the sensor ring as it passes the face of the active wheel speed sensor.
The active wheel speed sensor generates a signal that is sent to the ABS module. The wheel speed sensor circuitry connects to the ABS module through 2 wires and a connector at each wheel speed sensor. When the ignition is turned to the RUN position, the ABS module carries out a self-test by sending a reference voltage to all of the wheel speed sensors through their circuitry to determine if they are functional.
The ABS module continuously monitors and compares the rotational speed of each wheel and when it detects an impending wheel lock, modulates the brake pressure to the appropriate brake caliper. This is accomplished by triggering the hydraulic control unit (HCU) to open and close the appropriate solenoid valves. Once the affected wheel returns to normal speed, the ABS module returns the solenoid valves to their normal position and normal (base) braking resumes.

Frequently Asked Questions about C1234 Ford Code

1. What does the OBDII code C1234 mean on a Ford vehicle?

The C1234 code indicates that the right front wheel speed sensor is not sending a signal to the ABS module.

2. What are common symptoms of the C1234 code?

Common symptoms include an illuminated ABS or traction control warning light, loss of ABS functionality, and potential braking instability on slippery surfaces.

3. What causes the C1234 code to appear?

This code can be caused by a faulty wheel speed sensor, damaged sensor wiring, corroded connectors, or issues with the ABS module.

4. How can I diagnose the C1234 code?

Start by inspecting the right front wheel speed sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to test the sensor’s resistance and check for continuity in the circuit.

5. Can a dirty wheel speed sensor cause the C1234 code?

Yes, dirt or debris on the sensor or tone ring can interfere with the signal and trigger the code.

6. How do I fix the C1234 code?

Repairs may involve cleaning the sensor and tone ring, replacing the wheel speed sensor, repairing damaged wiring, or replacing corroded connectors.

7. Is it safe to drive with the C1234 code active?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, the ABS and traction control systems may not function properly, increasing the risk of skidding in slippery conditions.

8. How much does it cost to fix the C1234 code?

The repair cost depends on the issue, but replacing a wheel speed sensor typically ranges from $100 to $300, including parts and labor.

9. Can a faulty ABS module trigger the C1234 code?

Yes, although less common, a malfunctioning ABS module can cause communication issues with the wheel speed sensor.

10. Will clearing the C1234 code fix the problem?

Clearing the code will not fix the underlying issue. The code will return unless the root cause is addressed.
