C1233 Ford Code - Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Input Signal Missing

Quick Answer

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module receives wheel speed readings from each wheel speed sensor and processes this information to determine if an ABS event is necessary. Common causes include Mismatched Tire Size, Damage Wheel Speed Sensor Ring, Faulty Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code C1233 Ford Description

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module receives wheel speed readings from each wheel speed sensor and processes this information to determine if an ABS event is necessary. The wheel speed sensor detects the magnetic field of the sensor ring as it passes the face of the active wheel speed sensor.
The active wheel speed sensor generates a signal that is sent to the ABS module. The wheel speed sensor circuitry connects to the ABS module through 2 wires and a connector at each wheel speed sensor. When the ignition is turned to the RUN position, the ABS module carries out a self-test by sending a reference voltage to all of the wheel speed sensors through their circuitry to determine if they are functional.
The ABS module continuously monitors and compares the rotational speed of each wheel and when it detects an impending wheel lock, modulates the brake pressure to the appropriate brake caliper. This is accomplished by triggering the hydraulic control unit (HCU) to open and close the appropriate solenoid valves. Once the affected wheel returns to normal speed, the ABS module returns the solenoid valves to their normal position and normal (base) braking resumes.

Discuss the causes and fixes for C1233 Ford OBDII Code

  • Code c1233. Replaced front left speed sensor due to a rodent eating the original. Had no codes prior to this happening. Have 5 volt to the plug prior to sensor connection. Cleaned sensor pick up gear. Fuses and wires are good. Replaced speed sensor with another and same outcome. What am I missing. Thanks. Mark

  • What model and year is your Ford?

Unfortunately there is nothing else to check. My suggestion is to double check all the wires and fuses, and If all is OK, then there is nothing left but the ABS control unit.

  • My code gave me same reading... ultimately the toner ring made sense, its on its way to me. $17 through Ford. My question is for those who have experienced these "go", was your vehicle rumbling and clunking? I thought I lost a tie rod at first, it was that bad.. 2007 FORD EXPLORER XLT

  • I got the code and took off the front left wheel. On my truck, I had to replace the whole wheel hub. It came with the new sensor and wiring. Installed it, put the brake back on and the light is still on and computer reading that the signal is missing. Double checked and it is all on correctly. What am I missing?

  • Let me check if I can find more information, what model and year is your Ford?
