Code B2868 Ford Description

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system monitors the air pressure in the 4 road tires with wheel-mounted tire pressure sensors. The sensors transmit radio frequency signals to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) approximately every 60 seconds when the vehicle speed exceeds 20 mph (32 km/h). If vehicle is stationary for more than 30 minutes, the sensor will enter into a sleep mode and stop transmitting.
Each tire pressure sensor transmission is compared against a low-pressure limit (pressure listed on vehicle certification label minus 25 percent, which will be about 6-9 psi). If it is determined that the tire pressure has fallen below this limit, the SJB sends a message to the instrument cluster, which then illuminates the low pressure warning indicator and displays the appropriate message(s) in the message center (if equipped).

Frequently Asked Questions about B2868 Ford Code

1. What does the OBDII code B2868 mean on a Ford vehicle?

The code B2868 indicates a fault with the left front tire pressure sensor, meaning the sensor is not transmitting data correctly to the vehicle's Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

2. What are common symptoms of the B2868 code?

Symptoms include a TPMS warning light on the dashboard, inaccurate tire pressure readings, or a failure to detect the left front tire pressure.

3. What causes the B2868 fault code?

Common causes include a damaged or malfunctioning tire pressure sensor, low battery in the sensor, wiring issues, or interference with the sensor signal.

4. How can I fix the B2868 code on my Ford?

You may need to replace the left front tire pressure sensor, check the wiring and connections, or reprogram the TPMS using a diagnostic tool.

5. Can I drive with the B2868 code active?

Yes, but it’s not recommended as you won’t receive accurate tire pressure readings, which can affect safety and fuel efficiency.

6. How do I know if the left front tire pressure sensor needs replacement?

If the sensor consistently fails to transmit data after reprogramming or a diagnostic scan shows it’s faulty, replacement is likely necessary.

7. Can low tire pressure cause the B2868 code?

Low tire pressure itself doesn’t cause this code, but it might trigger the TPMS warning light. The code specifically refers to a fault with the sensor.

8. Will resetting the TPMS clear the B2868 code?

Resetting the TPMS may temporarily clear the code, but if there’s an underlying issue with the sensor, the code will return.

9. What tools are needed to diagnose the B2868 code?

A TPMS diagnostic tool or OBDII scanner can help identify the fault and determine if the sensor needs reprogramming or replacement.

10. How much does it cost to repair the B2868 code?

The cost can vary, but replacing a tire pressure sensor typically ranges from $50 to $150, plus labor if done professionally.
