I would drain the transmission fluid (drop the transmission pan) and check to see if there are metal pieces or excessive metal shaving inside the transmission pan

if the car was ever shifting hard or slamming gears the transmission might be bad.

the transmission fluid should be replaced (drain and filled) every 30k miles. If you have not had it serviced could be why you have the issues (in some rare cases replacing the fluid and filter might help if there are no metal pieces or excessive metal shaving)

if the transmission is bad getting a used one might be better than having it rebuilt. Dont forget to flush the transmission lines before install the other transmission
