How to Reset the Check Engine Light
The Engine Light (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) indicates that your vehicle’s on-board computers have stored a fault code. There are many fault codes, and more than one code could be stored in the computer’s memory.
An OBDII scanner is the best alternative to read codes, some manufacturers may have instructions on how to read the codes using the Engine Warning Light, but using an OBDII scanner is more accurate.
Once the problem is resolved, the Engine Warning Light (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) can be clear with an OBDII scanner or, in some cases, by disconnecting the car battery for more than 30 minutes.
Resetting the code will also clear important information that helps diagnose the problem. If the issue has not been resolved, it is not recommended not to reset the Engine Warning Light.
