My gas cap was loose and caused the check engine light to come on, and it didn't want to shift/accelerate normally. Once the cap was tightened, the check engine light went off and the car functioned fine. OnStar sent me the normal monthly diagnostic report. It showed code P0700, but the car is working fine. Could the gas cap incident have cause the P0700 code?

This is a transmission code and not related to the fuel cap. This will explain the poor shifting quality. The code only means the transmission control module is requesting the check engine light to come on,. There will be codes stored in the Transmission control module.
