I have a 2005 clk500 automatic coupe that starts intermittenly. doesnt even crank just all lights on dash come on but no noise. no check engine light is on. i took to a parts store and code P0401 came up. car runs flawless when started. usually the longer you drive it is when it starts not starting. alternator, starter, fuel pump, and battery all checked and good. i replaced crankshaft sensor twice (borg warner) and none of them worked. put old one back on and it started right back up. should i try a different brand or dealer brand and try it one more time or should I just go to dealer just to get it diagnosed. only thing is they tell you one thing and they say if that dont work we will replace this. never a straight answer. Confused...

HI there

First, since you put the factory crank sensor back in and the car started, you either have a bad connection or you do in fact need to get a crank sensor from the dealer.

The code is for the egr system. This shouldn't affect the starting of the car unless the egr valve is stuck open. If it is, then the car will have a difficult time starting.
