These codes actually should and do normally show up together. The 1540 is for the speed sensor on the transmission, the 500 is for the speedometer. The signal flows like this: Speed sensor ontransmission, to the speedometer, then from the speedometer to the ecm. Since the one on the transmission has stopped sending signal, there is no signal to the ecm passing through the speedometer. If the speedometer fails, you can actually have no codes because the speed sensor on the transmisson can be working and still sending signal through the speedometer to the ecm. Replace the sensor on the transmission to resolve the problem.
